Our History
A Legacy Built on Faith and Community
The story of Spratt United Methodist Church is one of faith, perseverance, and a community coming together with a shared purpose. For well over a century, our church has served as a place where neighbors gather to worship, celebrate life's blessings, support one another during difficult times, and grow together in their relationship with Christ.

While our congregation continues to look toward the future, we remain deeply connected to the people whose dedication laid the foundation for the church we know today. Every worship service, community gathering, and act of service reflects the legacy that began generations ago.
A Vision Begins
In 1894, members of the local community recognized the need for a permanent place of worship in the Spratt area. Families generously donated both land and timber, while a nearby sawmill transformed those raw materials into the lumber and shingles needed to construct the church.

What followed was years of determination, volunteer labor, and unwavering faith. Working together, local families built not only a church building, but also a lasting symbol of hope and community that would serve future generations.

After years of careful planning and construction, the original church officially opened its doors for worship in 1912, becoming an important gathering place for the surrounding rural communities of what is now Alpena County.
The Old Spratt Church
Today, one of the most treasured pieces of our history is affectionately known as "The Old Church."
For nearly a century, the original church building stood proudly along Spratt Road, witnessing countless worship services, weddings, baptisms, funerals, holiday celebrations, and community gatherings. It became a familiar landmark and a spiritual home for generations of local families.

Recognizing its historical significance, the original church building was carefully relocated in 2005 to the Jesse Besser Museum in Alpena, Michigan. Through this preservation effort, an important piece of our community's heritage continues to be protected and appreciated by visitors from across Northeast Michigan.
Although the building now resides at the museum, it remains very much a part of our congregation's story.
Continuing a Cherished Tradition
Each September, members of Spratt United Methodist Church gather once again inside the historic Old Church for a special worship service.
This annual tradition allows us to reconnect with our roots while celebrating God's continued faithfulness throughout the generations. Worshipping within the same walls that welcomed believers more than one hundred years ago provides a meaningful reminder that while buildings may change locations, the church itself is its people.
We warmly invite both members and visitors to join us for this special annual service and experience a unique piece of local history.

Our mission continues to be: “To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the
world.”
We strive to live out that mission by creating a welcoming environment where everyone can grow in faith, build meaningful relationships, and discover opportunities to serve others.
